Lets face it, people read in bed.Some people read so that they can fall asleep.Somepeople wake up in the middle of the night and then readthemselves back to sleep.Some people just want toread in bed.Well, what about that other person thatsleeps with you?Is it fair to them to keep the roomlit up like the middle of the day?

Not really, so what are thealternatives?I found bedside lamps, headboard lampsand book lights attached to the book, your glasses or aheadband.

I tried them all and here is whatI found:

Bedside lamps, because of their distance and position fromyour book, just need to brighten the room with too muchlight to properly illuminate your reading material.Both your reading environment and your partners sleepingenvironment are not exactly optimal.

Headboard lamps are better butthey still give you that annoying feeling of having aspotlight behind you.If you wear glasses, thatspotlight also shines onto the back of them, reflectinguncomfortably into your eyes.Not exactly focusing themood and your attention on your book!

Booklights mounted on your book are so close to your book thatthe light pattern is not uniform in intensity across thepage.This causes eye strain.Additionally, thelight beam moves with every movement of your body, everypage turned and every movement of your bedmate.It isamazing how distracting this is.

And talk about distraction causedby light beam movement, how about the lights that getmounted on your head somewhere.It feels like being acoal miner.Besides, imagine falling asleep with somecontraption on your head, not very comfortable and they wakeyou up when you move in your sleep.

Talking about falling asleep with the light on, what aboutthe fact that most of these book lights mounted on the book, or you, are battery powered?Sure you could power them with a cord, but then you have a cord to wrap around yourneck while you are sleeping.Sounds like fun to me!

Yourbedmate will sleep.Light shines only where you need it.

In both of these pictures, thejurafis turned ON.Notice that when you view thejuraf's head fromthe side or rear, you do not see any radiating light fromthe LED bulb.This means that direct light from thejuraf's LED willonly go where you point it.

The beam is just where youwant it, and no where else.Not in your eyes, yourbedmates eyes, or your dogs eyes.This is the mainreason I invented the juraf since I'm the onethat is trying to sleep in our household.

Overthe years I have developed a love/hate relationship withbatteries.I love them when they work and they areused in places where we need them.I hate them whenthey run down and I have to reach into my wallet to replacethem.Also, with me, its just the annoyance ofchanging or maintaining them.

Well, a bedside reading light does nothave to be battery powered, its that simple (unless youdon't have electricity nearby).The juraf will never causemy love/hate state of mind to rear its ugly head.Ithink there are a lot of people out there who are with me onthis one.

The design of this switching power supplyis such that it only takes up one outlet position in areceptacle, even in power bars!

The power supply meets California's newstrict power consumption regulations.The current drawwith the light off is about 1.2 ma and about 1.5 ma with iton.

Penny a month operation and cool,touchable LED bulb.

Thejurafutilizesstate-of-the-art technology by using a Light Emitting Diode(LED) as the light source. LED s are so efficient that onlya small amount of electricity is needed to create wonderfulwhite light.In fact, at current electric rates, itonly costs about a penny a month to use thejuraf.Lets see a batterypowered lamp of equal intensity come anywhere near thatcost.

In fact due to its efficiency and incontrast to ordinary reading lights, the jurafdoes not get hot. There is no danger of burning yourfingers when you touch your jurafor suffering from radiant heat while you read.

Very uniform beam and pleasant colorspectrum.

Inselecting the LED, I found that all LED's are not createdequal.In fact, some LED's beams are so loaded withdark spots and spots of different colors, that you have tomove your reading material around, just to make out thewords.In my search, I came across the LED we now use.As you can see in this picture with the LED 18 inches fromthe surface, the beam is of even color, uniform inintensity, and of a pleasant white color spectrum.

4 chip LED, brighter than most batterylights.

Our 8mm LED is made out of 4standard LED chips in one package.This results inplenty of light to read by.Battery powered lampssimply have to compromise on intensity to obtain adequatebattery life.To get their claimed, 50 and 100 hourdurations, they have to use large batteries and limit theircurrent or number of LED's.The jurafhas no such limitations and the LED was selected toprovide just the right amount of light without overpoweringyour book in intensity.

Mounts to bed-sidetable or head-board.

Ispent a lot of time designing the clamp on the juraf.The clampwill grip surfaces from 1/2 inch thick, all the way to 7 1/2inches thick.Also, the clamp grips the surface 3/4inch from its edge so that it even grips surfaces withrounded edges.

The clips are fitted with 4polyurethane, mechanically captivated, pressure pads.This will ensure a firm but non-marring grip on yourvaluable furniture.

My favorite mounting method is toclamp the jurafto a thin hardcover book or similar object and then slip thebook between your mattresses.I call this the'under the mattress' mounting position.This isthe cleanest looking position and works very well on any bedthat has a mattress.

Onceyou have decided on a permanent mounting method you may wishto remove the excess threaded rod if it is a problem foryou.You may do this by bending it back and forth afew times near the plastic nut as shown.

Bendable, suits your reading position.

Icalled my lamp the juraffor obvious reasons.I took the liberty ofmisspelling natures giraffe, since there are common traitsbetween the two species.The jurafhas a long 32 inch neck and can be bent to reach whereit needs to, just like a real giraffe.We find theoptimum position for the LED is a little off to the side ofyour book and between your eyes and the reading surface.To change your reading position from your back to your sideinvolves a simply repositioning of the LED by swinging orsometimes bending its neck.

Swing away pivot for convenience.

Asa result of the juraf's LED being near your book, I found that getting in andout of bed proved less than easy until I added the swingpivot at its base.You can have the jurafbent to a nice reading position, yet simply push it awayfrom you when you want to get out of bed.Then whenyou get back in bed, all it takes to re-position the jurafis to swing it back in place.

LED bulb lasts many 1,000's of hours.
